We asked Carole to share her responses to the following questions:
Q. When did you begin working for this business and what is your role?
A. I joined Dover Federal in October, 1995 as a part-time teller and am currently the Marketing Director.
Q. History of when the business began...
A. Dover Federal was first chartered in 1958 by a handful of Air Force and civilian workers at Dover Air Force Base. Today we serve over 36,500 members, encompassing the military, Delaware families and over 340 different Select Groups, and have assets exceeding $318 million. The Credit Union is governed by members-volunteers elected to the Board of Directors and managed by experience financial professionals.
Q. What products/services does your company offer?
A. We offer a full range of financial products and services designed to fit the lifestyle and budgetary needs of Delawareans. Because we are a not-for-profit financial cooperative, our first obligation is to our member/owners. We know that they trust us to be fiscally responsible with their money. We follow sound financial management practices, and don't take unnecessary risks in order to make huge profits. Any, and all, profits that remain after the bills are paid are returned to our member/owners in the form of higher dividends, lower loan rates, more services, and fewer fees. According to the Credit Union National Association, in 2009 we provided $5,384,705 in direct financial benefits to over 36,000 members - saving each member household at least $284. And, the more our members used our services, the more they saved: high-use member households received $320 in direct member benefits! That's a lot of savings! But there's more to financial success than saving money. That's why we have experts available at every branch to help members make the most of their money: from helping pick the savings plan that will get them to goals faster, to helping decipher which loan product will best meet their needs and budget. And, a visit to our Retirement and Investment Center, with a complimentary consultation, will help them to prepare for life's many challenges. We believe strongly in becoming a solution for the financial success of our members and provide financial education seminars on topics from basic budgeting to buying a home - at no cost!
Q. What do you see in the future for the business?
A. W have never been a static organization - after all, we were formed in response to the needs of our members! I see Dover Federal continuing that tradition of service, expanding the products and services offered to our members in response to their evolving needs. The past few years have impacted the financial habits of both individuals and our local business community, and Dover Federal is aware of the hardship that many small business owners have faced getting the financial resources necessary to keep their businesses operational. We are currently researching products and services that will allow us to continue our legacy of great service to our local business community.
Q. What, in your opinion, does the Chamber do for you and your business?
A. The Chamber provides Dover Federal with the opportunity to explain the credit union difference to business owners and provide them with an avenue to help their employees reduce stress and save money by offering credit union membership. Attending and helping with the many different functions that the Chamber helps host and sponsor has expanded my personal horizons by allowing me to meet and get to know people from many different occupations and interests.
Q. What would you like to see the Chamber offer its members?
A. The opportunity to join Dover Federal, of course! It's a benefit that the Chamber could provide to its members without cost - and what could be better than free?
Q. Is there anything else the CDCC members should know about you or your business?
A. At Dover Federal, we are committed to our community. Dover Federal team members provide numerous hours of assistance to countless organizations throughout Delaware every year - much of it without fanfare or public recognition - because we care and it's the right thing to do. CDCC members should also know that everyone at Dover Federal puts our members first in everything we do.
